Need Help Choosing the Right Gas Strut?
Whether you're replacing old struts or ordering for a brand new build, we've made it easy to get it right the first time. Start by checking the label or sticker on your existing strut — it will usually include the extended length (mm), force rating (N), and shaft/body diameter (e.g. 8/18 or 10/22). You can match this directly with our product listings.
If there's no label or the strut is worn out, measure the fully extended length from centre of ball to centre of ball, and look at the thickness of the shaft and cylinder. This will help you choose the correct size (e.g. 8mm shaft, 18mm body = 8/18 strut).
For new builds, or if you’re sizing up a lid, hatch, or panel from scratch — use this basic rule of thumb:
Mount the strut at approximately 20–30% of the lid’s length from the hinge.
The Newton force (N) required depends on the weight of the panel and the mounting angle. A rough estimate formula is:
Force (N) = [Weight (kg) × 9.8 × Lid Length (mm)] ÷ (2 × Mount Distance from Hinge)
Still not sure? No worries — just send us your measurements or a photo of your old strut and we’ll help recommend the perfect match. Local installs are also available on the Gold Coast.
